Quilted Photography* or Quiltography, is the neatest thing and people are intrigued when they see them! Up close they appear to be a work of modern art using fabric and quilting as the medium. Seen from a distance, the image magically appears. (Squinting at the finished hanging gives the affect of seeing it at a distance. Try it with the provided samples.) In an average-sized room, images in smaller hangings appear quite easily. The larger hangings require a fairly large area to show to the best advantage. Because items are often produced after an order is received, please allow two to three weeks lead time on basket orders, three to four weeks for loom woven items, and four to six weeks for Quiltography. All basket materials that I use are natural fibers like reed, sea grass, ash or oak. The majority of my baskets are made from reed, a vine grown in Asia. It is more economical than natural woods. Because of its naturally light color, it is often desirable to add color either before or after the basket has been constructed. Accent colors are added by dying the reed before it is woven. Dyed reed can be purchased, but the weaver is then limited to the colors the suppliers handle. If a distinctive color is desired, the reed can be dyed by the weaver using special reed dyes or Rit dyes. By mixing a combination of available tints, just about any color desirable can be obtained. By dying your own reed, you have control over the intensity of color obtained, ranging from just a wash of color to a very intense hue. Adding an overall color to the basket is done after the basket has been woven by using special basket stains or mixing up a combination of stain, linseed oil and paint thinner. Stains can be applied by brushing, dipping or spraying and require several hours to dry. Applying stains to dyed reed tends to mute the color, which can be very pleasing in the overall appearance of the basket. The fabrics that I weave are woven with a great variety of materials-100% cotton, linen, wool or silk; synthetic fibers like nylon or rayon; handspun fibers; or perhaps a combination of fibers. Rag rugs are constructed of recycled fabrics, with denim being a customer favorite.
